First up is the history making FA Cup run that saw South Shields FC Women reach the second round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup for the first time in the clubs history. The run saw Shields take down league rivals Ponteland, cruise to victory against FC United of Manchester and upset Halifax, a team two league above, the game finished three each but went straight to penalties and following a thrilling penalty shootout Shields progressed to the next round where they faced Liverpool Feds, unfortunately the team fell short during the game and were knocked out of the FA Cup, but everyone at the club is immensely proud of their achievements.

The FA Cup also saw the breakthrough of International Academy player Ashley Townsend on the national stage, with her performance against Halifax earning her the prestigious baller of the round title, Ashley scored two goals in the game, including a stunning volley to make the game 2 - 1 and put The Mariners back into the lead. The same game also saw Catalina Abusada make her debut coming on as a substitute late in the second half.

Keeping our focus on the football side of the program, the season kicked off for our September 24 intake of male student athletes in October, following a tough start to the season the male squad has finished the semester on a high picking up 15 points out of a possible 18 in their last 6 six games in the league. Joao Costa is also flying high as the team’s top goalscorer scoring 12 goals in just 9 games. The male squad have also had to battle their way through an opening match day loss in the National Football Youth League Cup competition, just falling short to i2i, the team did well to bounce back from the defeat winning their two remaining group stage cup fixtures against i2i Newcastle and Scarborough Athletic respectively.

Finally, at the end of November we celebrated what has been a fantastic 15 months for our inaugural intake of the International Academy, the graduating players celebrated at the Stadium of Light and we couldn’t be happier for the players. The ceremony saw players from Masters in Business Administration, Masters in Sport Science and Masters in Sports Journalism receive their awards and take the first step in the next stage of their career.
